The Plashwood Estate has been in the Bevan family for several generations and until recently had been run as a private shoot. After a change of policy, the owners offered us the chance to become their shooting tenants.
The Estate, which is located between the villages of Wetherden, Haughley and Harleston in Mid Suffolk, comprises about 230 acres of mostly deciduous woodland and 2000 acres of farmland. The topography is undulating with small and moderate sized fields surrounded by high hedges and interspersed with many mature oak trees.
Shooting at Plashwood
We shoot a limited number of 200+ bird days. The geography of the Estate lends itself to showing top quality pheasant and partridges from the 25 or so cover crop drives in early to mid season. In late December and January the woodland comes into play with pheasants and a sprinkling of woodcock.
The owners of the Estate kindly organise the shoot day hospitality in Plashwood Hall and on a typical day the guns meet there for coffee at around 8.45 a.m. The shooting party move off shortly after 9.00 a.m. in the transport provided. After two drives there is a break for mid morning drinks and then a further drive before lunch is taken in the formal dining room in early afternoon. The day is completed by a further one or two drives to achieve the required bag. At the end of the shoot day the party retire to the elegant drawing room in Plashwood Hall for traditional tea, sandwiches and cake.
Ample birds are released on the Estate to ensure successful shoot days throughout the season.
